Cables of protest against the affront offered Jewish worshippers by the incident which took place at the Wailing Wall in Jerusalem on Yom Kippur were sent today to the League of Nations and to the Colonial Office of the British Government by the Zionist Organization of Canada, through its president, A. J. Freiman. Protests were also cabled by the Montreal Council of Orthodox Rabbis and the Montreal Jewish Community Council.
Canadian Zionists, in their cable to the League of Nations and to Lt. Colonel Amery, British Colonial Secretary, said: “The Canadian Zionist Organization joins world Jewry in protesting vigorously against the uncalled for affront committed against Jewish worshippes on the most sacred day of our calendar at the most sacred place of Jewish worship-the Wailing Wall in Jerusalem. All Jews feel that their right to worship at this place hallowed and cherished throughout the centuries should be officially acknowledged and safeguarded, so that there may be no recurrence of the deplorable incident.”
The resolution of protest was unanimously adopted at a meeting of the Executive Council of the Organization, at which Mr. Freiman presided.
The following cable, signed by Rabbi Hirsch Cohen, the president of the Council of Orthodox Rabbis, was also sent to the League of Nations and to the British Government: “The Council of Orthodox Rabbis unanimously passed a resolution expressing sorrow and regret at the events which took place on Yom Kippur at the Wailing Wall in Jerusalem, when the deepest sentiments of the Jewish race were outraged by the officials of the Jerusalem Police Force on this most holy day at this most holy place. We appeal to the British sense of justice that assurance may he given that such an occurrence may never again be repeated. And we also appeal to the League of Nations to recognize without further delay the right of the Jewish People to pray at the Wailing Wall.”
The Vaad Hair, the Montreal Jewish Comunity Council, cabled the following protest: “The Montreal Jewish Community was deeply moved to learn of the regrettable incident which took place at the Wailing Wall in Jerusalem on the holiest day in the Jewish calendar. We appeal to the British Government and to the League of Nations that proper protection be given to the Jewish worshippers at the Wailing Wall and to proclaim officially the Jewish rights of praying at this sacred historical place.”
This cable was signed by the praesidium of the Community Council, Messrs. J. Finestone and J. Rivenovitch.
