More than $1,555,000 has been appropriated by the Joint Distribution Committee to aid the more than 50,000 Israel-bound Jewish displaced persons who have passed through or are at present living on Cyprus island, it was announced here today by Moses A. Leavitt, executive vice-chairman.
Although there are now a total of 11,000 Jews still detained on the island, “every Cyprus refugee has been assisted in one form or another through J.D.C. relief and rehabilitation aid in the camps,” Mr. Leavitt pointed out. More than one and a half million pounds of foodstuffs, 83,800 pounds of clothing and 66,000 pounds of otter supplies have been sent to Cyprus by the agency, it was reported.
