Pledges of assistance and cooperation in the intensified appeal of the American Jewish Joint Distribution Committee for funds to carry on overseas welfare activities during 1933 are being received in “gratifying” numbers, Dr. Jonah B. Wise, chairman of the National Fund-Raising Committee, announced last night.
Many of the nation’s outstanding Jewish leaders have already signified their acceptance of membership on the national advisory campaign committee, Dr. Wise said, and pledges of local support have been received from Jewish communal leaders in a number of the more important cities. Endorsements have also been received from many Jewish groups and organizations.
“From the tenor of the hundreds of letters received at the Committee’s offices since we announced our decision to make an appeal for our suffering co-religionists overseas,” Dr. Wise declard, “it is evident that the Jews of America, despite the heavy burden of supporting their local institutions which they are carrying, are appreciative of their obligations to the less fortunate overseas and aware that they have the additional duty of aiding them.
“The response to our plea for assistance thus far has been gratifying and we have received pledges of cooperation and support that assure active conduct of the campaign throughout the country. I am hopeful that sufficient funds will be raised, as a result, to continue through 1933 the emergency relief measures now sponsored by the Joint Distribution Committee among the millions of impoverished Jews in Eastern Europe.”
