Dr. Abraham Granott, world head of the Jewish National Fund, arrived here today from Jerusalem to confer with American JNF leaders on a five-year plan designed to rehabilitate 250,000 acres of land in Israel. The plan, he said, will pave the way for establishment of a chain of settlements along the northern, southern and eastern borders of the country, thus providing Israel with fortifications consisting of “a living chain of villages whose farmers are ready both for work and defense.”
The plan will require expenditure of $53,000, 000, according to Dr. Granott, and American Jews will be asked to contribute 70 percent of the total, or $37,457,000. Within the past five years, 180 such border villages were established and 200 more are planned by 1960, in addition to the planting of 25,000, 000 trees in forests located along the borders.
