Appointment of Gaynor Jacobson, director of United Hias Activities in Europe, North Africa and Latin America, as executive director of United Hias Service, was announced today by Murray I. Gurfein, United Hias president. Mr. Jacobson will succeed James P. Rice, who resigned to assume the executive directorship of the Jewish Federation and Jewish Welfare Fund of Chicago.
Mr. Jacobson will be succeeded as United Hias director for Europe and North Africa by Henry Levy, an expert in the rehabilitation and resettlement of refugees, who worked with the Joint Distribution Committee for more than 20 years.
Mr. Gurfein said United Hias had accepted Mr. Rice’s resignation “with great regret,” pointing out that he had “skillfully guided the operations of our agency during the past decade. We shall miss him, his leadership and his wise counsel.” Mr. Gurfein noted that Mr. Jacobson had been with United Hias for 13 years, and was “a recognized migration and resettlement leader who, as executive director, will make a positive contribution to the work of our agency.”
