With the Palestine government opposing the plan of the Jaffa municipality to discontinue the use of electricity for lighting the city because the power comes from the Jewish-owned Rutenberg Company, the Jaffa city officials have decided, with the advice of the district commissioner, to continue to buy electricity form the Rutenberg Company.
The Rutenberg Company, however, is insisting that the government guarantee the payment but this the government has refused.
Last year the Jaffa municipality cancelled its contract with the Rutenberg Company and made arrangements to have the streets lighted by lux lamps. The contractors who bid for the lux lamp lighting made such high offers that the cost of the lamps was greater than the electric power.
