Members of the Jewish Defense League staged a sit-in in the office of the president of the Federation of Jewish Philanthropies of New York this morning to support demands that the Federation allocate more funds for Jewish education, provide funds to finance the league’s “safety patrols,” assist institutions threatened by violence and arrange for “popular” election of Federation officials. Later the sit-in was strengthened by pickets outside the building. A Federation spokesman said the organization would not be pressured into negotiating with the league. He pointed out that the Federation now allocates in excess of $1.5 million for Jewish education and that there were channels provided for applications to Federation for support. He said that the Federation rejected the demand for funds for the league’s “safety patrols” taking the position that security was the function of the civic authorities. The Federation had no immediate plans to have the demonstrators ejected from its offices.
