For the first time since World war II, Jerusalem was blacked out tonight as a precaution against possible bombing of the city. The order to black out came from Israeli Air Force headquarters here following two recent attempts by Arab aircraft to bomb the Holy City and in the light of persistent rumors that the Egyptians are planning to begin an air assault against Jerusalem.
The Jewish Agency, at a meeting last night, decided to acquire two additional ships with a tonnage equal to that of the Negba and Galila–which the Agency already owns–and which will make it possible for the number of passengers reaching Israel monthly on Agency vessels to increase to 4,000. Previously it was reported that the immigration schedule was being hampered by lack of shipping space. The Agency also approved a colonization program calling for the establishment of new settlements during October, some of which have already gone up.
Laila Joseph, 19, youngest daughter of Israeli Military Governor Dr. Bernard Joseph, was killed Saturday in an Egyptian assault against a Negev settlement, it was learned here today when Dr. Joseph flow to the settlement to attend his daughter’s funeral.
An Israeli military spokesman in Tel Aviv said today that “we will cooperate with the U.N. investigating team being sent to the Negev front, “but pointed out that although the Egyptians launched a full-scale attack in Telel, Kuneitra, Kirbet, Mahaz, and have bombed and shelled other regions in the Negev, “the U.N. says that both sides are involved.”
Representatives of 30 branches of the Magen David Adom from all sections of Israel today joined in a reception to the four-man American Red Mogen Dovid for Palestine delegation now in Tel Aviv. The meaning paid tribute to the memory of Magen David Adom volunteers who were killed trying to aid wounded Israeli and Arab fighters. A resolution was adopted thanking President Truman, Louis Lipsky. Mayor William O’Dwyer and Henry Pine, president of Buai Zion, for their aid to the organization.
Dr. Moshe Sneh, former member of the Jewish Agency Executive, left for the United States today on a mission in behalf of Mapam, the left-wing faction in the Labor movement.
