Jerusalem Exhibition at Jewish Museum Commemorates Hadassah’s 60th Anniversary

To commemorate its 60th anniversary. Hadassah is sponsoring an exhibition at the Jewish Museum which opens to the public tomorrow and continues through March 26. The exhibition, “The Word From Jerusalem,” will be concerned both with the city of Jerusalem and the history of Hadassah. Following the New York premiere, the exhibition will tour in major cities of the United States through 1972–Hadassah’s sixtieth anniversary year.

The exhibition will occupy the entire first floor of the Jewish Museum and one large gallery on the second floor. The first large gallery will include: a video tape greeting from Teddy Kollek, Mayor of Jerusalem; enlarged photographic reproductions of old views of the city relating to its history; a large screen for special slide and audio tape programs, which will present images of the city, it life, its people, its activities, its architecture and the total environment. In another gallery, the program will focus on the different kinds of people who compose the population of Jerusalem and will provide more dramatic details of sectors of the city’s life.

A third gallery will be devoted to Hadassah, whose work in Jerusalem began during the Turkish rule and extended through the British Mandate, both World Wars and the Israel War of Independence, to the present. The second floor will feature a new kind of library–a large number of different communications media, video monitors and audio listening headsets. There will be a current selection of newspapers and magazines from Jerusalem available to read. The video monitors will contain edited interviews with people in Jerusalem in which the Americans will ask questions and answers will be provided by people in Jerusalem.

Feedback and personal involvement techniques will be created which provide the opportunity for every visitor to the Museum to be able to relate to other people in the Museum and to people in Jerusalem. Visitors will be encouraged to write letters to people in Jerusalem to get further answers to their questions. The Jewish Museum is under the auspices of the Jewish Theological Seminary of America.
