An enthusiastic reception was given today by Jews in Rome to Dr. Solomon Umberto Nahon, representative of the Jewish Agency for Palestine, who arrived from Jerusalem to distribute about 900 Palestine immigration certificates.
Dr. Nahon, who prior to emigrating to Palestine six years ago, was the secretary of the Zionist Organization in Rome, was welcomed by Jewish leaders here at a special meeting this afternoon, immediately upon his arrival. He is the first civilian to arrive here from Palestine with a message from the Jewish homeland. He is scheduled to remain for several weeks.
Dr. Nahon today conferred with officials of the Zionist organizations in Rome and with the representative of the Intergovernmental Committee on Refugees, discussing the question of transportation of those who will be selected for emigration to Palestine. At present, there are 2,000 applicants for Palestine visas already on the list of the Zionist Organization on here. The 900 who will be selected are expected to leave for Palestine by the end of March. They will be the first group of Jews to leave Italy for Palestine since the liberation of Rome by the Allies.
