It is now established that the Jewish banker, Bern Meyer, who committed suicide yesterday, shot himself because of the anti-Semitic policy of his Socialist comrades who did not want a Jewish director of the Municipal Bank. Hence many of the Socialists absented themselves from the election at which Meyer was a candidate thus enabling M. Feidner, the Christian Social Democrat, to be elected.
Meyer was a highly individualistic person and an economic genius but he could not bear up under the anti-Semitic betrayal of his comrades. The press emphasizes his fine personality and recalls that he was a graduate of an American school of finance and was prepared to leave a highly paid position with the Michael Corporation to accept an underpaid communal position.
