A valuable collection of manuscripts, scrapbooks, diaries and inscribed copies of the works of John Esten Cooke, Virginia novelist and biographer of Stonewall Jackson, was donated to the library of Congress today by Nathan W. Walleck, prominent Jewish business man and collector.
Cooke, who died in 1886 at the age of 56, wrote some of the most authoritative books extant on Virginia and the Civil War. Archibald MacLeish, chief librarian of the Congressional Library, who announced the acquisition, described the gift as “one of the most significant donations of southern memorabilia received by the library in recent years.
