Five awards carrying cash prizes totaling $800 for 1952’s best works of Jewish interest in the fiction and juvenile fields were made tonight at the annual meeting of the Jewish Book Council of America, which is sponsored by the National Jewish Welfare Board.

The $250 Harry and Ethel Daroff Memorial Fiction Award went to Michael Blankfort for his novel “The Juggler.” The $250 Isaac Siegel Memorial Award for 1952’s best Jewish juvenile in English was given to Mrs. Lillian S. Freehof, for her two works published during the year, “Stories of King David” and “Star Light Stories.” The three Harry Kovner Memorial Awards of $100 each went to: Dr. Isidore Goldstick for his translation of “Poems of Yehoash”; Dr. A. S. Schwartz for his cumulative contribution to Hebrew poetry on the occasion of his 75th birthday, and to Mark Schweid for his collection of Yiddish poems.

Dr. Alexander Marx, librarian for the past 50 years at the Jewish Theological Seminary of America, was honored on his 75th birthday with a citation for “his distinguished career” in the realm of Jewish books and his work in rescuing “precious manuscripts and volumes from the hands of the would-be destroyers.” Dr. Salo W. Baron, president of the American Jewish Historical Society, was keynote speaker.
