More than 200 leaders from 30 Jewish communities in Virginia held an all-day conference here yesterday at which the effects of the Soviet drive against Jews were discussed. Speakers emphasized the need for increased contributions to the United Jewish Appeal in order to help those able to escape from countries behind the Iron Curtain.
Checks amounting to $151,000 were presented at the conference as contributions to the United Jewish Appeal. The principal speaker at the conference was Mrs. Helena Benatar, president of the North African Jewish Refugee Relief Committee of Casablanca, who is visiting the United States to help the UJA in its fund-raising activities.
