The smallest Jewish community in Belgium, the 65 Jews of the Ardenese town of Arlon, celebrated the 100th anniversary of its synagogue, the oldest in Belgium. The community was among the most active and flourishing in the country in the 19th century.
The mayor and all of the town officials, as well as many Catholic, Protestants and lay leaders attended the ceremony. The Jewish communities of Belgium and Luxemberg also were represented. They included Paul Philippson, president of the Jewish consistory and Chief Rabbi Robert Dreyfuss of Belgium.
