Jewish Congress Appeals Against Transfer of Displaced Jews to Austrian Jurisdiction

The World Jewish Congress has appealed to the International Refugee Organization not to transfer displaced Jews now in II.R.O. camps in Austria to the jurisdiction of the Austrian authorities, it was announced here today. The plea was made after receipt of urgent appeals from alarmed Jews in Austrian DP camps.

In a letter to J. Donald Kingsley, director general of I.R.O., the World Jewish Congress pointed out that the I.R.O. need not transfer any DP’s who are in the process of resettlement or repatriation. Most of the Jewish DP’s are eligible for resettlement in the United States under the new DP immigration bill and have indicated a desire to emigrate, the letter said. On that basis, it asked that they be classified as being in the process of resettlement and be allowed to remain under I.R.O. suspices.
