The General Coordinating Committee of the Jewish Cultural Clubs and Societies has declared in a resolution that the Indians at Wounded Knee “deserve the support of everyone who believes in justice and democracy.” The coordinating committee of the association, which represents 60 organizations in New York, called upon its members and the members and leaders of all Jewish organizations “to act in the spirit of the prophets” and “to extend a hand of support to the Indian people in their just struggle” for their civil and human rights.
The resolution further stated that, “The brutal genocidal atrocities of white America against the Indian people, and the cruel deprivation of their lands and rights are shameful chapters in the history of our country. It is time that at least partial retribution is granted to the Indian people by assuring them the means and measures for decent housing, employment, health care, economic development and education.”
The committee called on the U.S. government to abide by the treaties and all recent agreements made with the Indians, to restore their “stolen” lands, to abolish the Bureau of Indian Affairs, to remove troops from Wounded Knee and to enter into “genuine negotiations for a settlement.”
