A 24,000,000-volt betatron–the newest weapon in the fight against cancer–has been installed in Mount Sinai Hospital and will go into action in about a month, it was announced this week-end.
The machine, which can treat cancer with either electrons or X-rays, stands inside seven-foot thick concrete walls as part of the hospital’s new $750,000 radio-therapy center. Dr. John Boland, a new director of the hospital’s Department of Radio-Therapy, will supervise use of the betatron. He has been working with multi-million volt X-ray machines for four years at the Christie Hospital in Manchester, England, the largest radio-therapy center in the world.
