An appeal was made here today by Elio Toaff, the Chief Rabbi of Rome, and Judge Sergio Piperno, President of the Federation of Jewish Communities, to Pope Paul VI and Foreign Minister Aldo Moro, asking them to intercede with the Soviet authorities and prevent the show trial of Jews in Leningrad, which is now being prepared. At the same time in Amsterdam, the Dutch Committee for Solidarity with Russian Jews sent a cable to Soviet Prime Minister Alexei Kosygin also in connection with the impending Leningrad trial. The cable, recalling Kosygin’s promise in Paris in 1966 to allow Soviet Jews to join their families in Israel, protested violation of this promise.
