Jewish communities in southern Chile have suffered great material losses as a result of earthquake and tidal waves, but no casualties have been reported, Samuel ‘Gleiser, chairman of the Zionist Federation of Chile, reported today. According to Mr. Gleiser, Jews lost their homes and commercial buildings at Concepcion, Temuco, Los Angeles, Valdivia and Puerto Monte, but the extent of the losses has not yet been ascertained.
So far, the Jewish community of Chile has turned over to Dr. Sotero del Rio, the Home Minister, $20, 000 as well as medicines, foods and clothing for relief of the sufferers in the disaster area. Further funds, it was said, today, will be contributed by the Jewish community in the next few days. The specific aid needed by the Jewish sufferers in the devastated areas are expected to be ascertained in the next few days.
