Jewish negotiators offered to settle all Holocaust-era claims with Swiss banks and the Swiss government for $1.5 billion, according to news reports. The offer, which reportedly was transmitted to the Swiss last week by U.S. Undersecretary of State Stuart Eizenstat, comes after the Swiss offered to pay $600 million to settle these claims. Meanwhile, it appears that U.S. finance officers will levy sanctions against the banks and a class-action lawsuit against the banks will move ahead if an agreement is not reached by a July 1 deadline.
