The Jewish Institute of Religion, New York’s only liberal school for the training of rabbis and Jewish communal workers, will hold its formal opening exercises for the fifth academic year this evening at the Institute. The main address of welcome will be delivered by Dr. William Rosenau. Associate Professor in Post-Biblical Hebrew, Johns Hopkins University, and member of the Board of Governors of the Hebrew Union College, who will speak on “The Call for Readjustment.”
Judge Julian W. Mack, vice-chairman of the Board of the Jewish Institute of Religion, and Dr. Stephen S. Wise, acting president of the Institute, will also speak.
The Hebrew Union College School for Teachers in New York City will open for its fourth year of work on October 13th, at Temple Emanu-El.
The School prepares men and women for religious school teaching, offering a two years course of training, which includes a comprehensive survey of Judaism and its institutions, the Hebrew language and Literature, the History of the Jewish people, and the Pedagogy of religious school subjects.
The School also conducts a Placement Bureau through which graduates and qualified undergraduates are placed in teaching positions in the religious schools of this city. There are twenty-nine affiliated Religious Schools in this city which give preference to the grauates of this School.
All applicants for admission to the School must be High School graduates. The School pursues an intensive curriculum in Hebrew for those who enter with a knowledge of the language. Beginners classes are also organized.
Tuition at the Hebrew Union College School for Teachers is free. A nominal registration fee of $2 per semester is charged.
With a student enrollment of 220, the New Jersey Normal School for Jewish Teachers, the first of its kind in the state, will formally commence its sessions tomorrow night. October 5, with public exercises in Temple B’nai Jeshurun, in whose building the school will be housed. The speakers at the opening exercises will include Dr. David Corson, City Superintendent of Schools, Dr. Wilson Farrand, Headmaster of the Newark Academy; Abraham N. Franzblau, principal of the Hebrew Union College School for Teachers in New York; Rabbi Solomon Foster, president of the new school and Dr. Leon Mones, director. A musical program has been arranged by Cantor Maurice Cowan of the temple.
The new institution is privately supported and will be governed by a board of directors and a Students’ Advisory Council. The instructors will be Rabbi Foster, Dr. Mones, Dr. Henry M. Goldstein and Charles Rubens. The subjects taught will include History, Hebrew, Religion, Pedagogy, etc. An advanced course in Hebrew and supplementary lectures will be given.
JUDEA INSURANCE COMPANY TO OPEN BRANCH IN ENGLAND
The Judea Insurance Company, Ltd., the first Jewish insurance company, with headquarters in Jerusalem, will shortly open a branch in London, according to the statement of Judge Jacob S. Strahl, President of the Judea Industrial Corporation who returned on the Steamer Aquitania from a three months trip in Europe.
European Jewry is watching with great interest the development of the first Jewish insurance company in Palestine and is mindful of the prospects of this institution as a medium in the rebuilding of Palestine. Some of the most prominent Jews in England have acquired shares in the Judea Industrial Corporation, which is chartered in the State of New York and is the owner of the Judea Insurance Company, Ltd., with the home office in Jerusalem, Judge Strahl declared.
