President Johnson’s new educational program which includes shared time and other forms of Federal aid to religious schools, was today hailed by the Agudath Israel of America as “a step forward in meeting the educational needs of our nation.”
Rabbi Menachem M. Schneerson, the Lubavitcher Rebbe, declared in a statement that since Jewish education was one of the cardinal precepts of the Jewish faith, the question of Federal aid to parochial schools “should rest in the hands of the Halachicly competent Jewish clergy and certainly not in the hands of Jewish laymen or organizations.”
