Professor Samuel Steinherz, well known Jewish scholar, formerly dean of the German University at Prague, was the recipient of many congratulatory messages today on the occasion of his seventieth anniversary.
Professor Steinherz resigned from the University because of an anti-Semitic campaign conducted against him. He is a member of the Czeshoslovakian lodge of the Independent Order B’nai Brith and takes an active interest in Jewish communal affairs.
New York State Superintendent of Insurance James A. Beha confirmed a report that his office has had under investigation the financial affairs of the United States Grand Lodge of the Order B’rith Abraham, sixty-eight-year-old Jewish fraternal and benevolent organization with 62,000 members in its 200 subordinate lodges. The or ganization is reported by an examiner of the State Insurance Department to be able to pay its creditors at least 40 per cent, on its debts, but officers of the lodge stated that it was on the verge of dissolution. The cause is given as low insurance rates and a high mortality among members of the organization.
The Order B’rith Abraham has no connection with the Independent Order B’rith Abraham.
The will of Louis J. Block, author and educator, who died in Chicago of injuries sustained in an automobile accident provides a perpetual trust fund of $4,000 to be used as a scholarship for the outstanding pupil of each graduating class of the John Marshall High School, of which Mr. Block was the head for thirty-one years.
