Enrollment of children in the Jewish schools of this city has risen 51.4 percent in the past five years, while the percentage increase of such enrollment in suburban areas has jumped by 88.6 percent in the same time. The figures of enrollment increase were made public at a press conference here today by Dr. Azriel Eisenberg, executive vice president of the Jewish Education Committee of New York.

Figures revealed at the conference showed that of 332,000 children between the ages of 5 and 14 in the school year 1954-55, 128,000 were receiving Jewish schooling. At the same time, 8,500 of 86,000 high school students were receiving advanced Jewish training. Between 85 and 90 percent of Jewish children in this area have received at least some kind of Jewish training at one time or another in their school careers.

Other statistics showed that 6,500 children were studying Hebrew in secular high schools, and that the new York Jewish community is spending $16,500,000 a year on Jewish education.
