Failure of the Los Angeles Board of Education to act on a plea on behalf of Jewish teachers in the public school system will mean the loss of two days’ salary for hundreds of such teachers planning to absent themselves for the Jewish High Holy Days next month, it was disclosed today.
That assertion was made by Harold B. Denner, one of two teachers who appeared before the board last May, asking for time off without loss of pay to teachers absent for religious holidays or for confinement for illness. The board took the matter under advisement and has not acted since on the request.
Mr. Denner said many cities have provisions allowing three or more days’ personal leave each year for public school teachers, to cover religious observances falling on a regular school day. He said that city school systems giving salary relief on religious holidays include Akron, Baltimore, Boston, Buffalo, Cleveland, Denver, Detroit, Memphis, Miami, Newark, New Orleans, New York, Oakland, Portland, Ore., Richmond, Calif., San Francisco, San Jose, and Washington, D. C.
