The question of the forthcoming municipal elections was taken up at a meeting of the Vaad Leumi, National Council of Palestine Jews. Representatives of the Jewish communal councils were also present.
Dr. Weinshall, who spoke on behalf of the Zionist Revisionists urged that the Jewish population boycott the elections. Dr. Weinshall’s proposal was opposed by the majority of speakers, who strongly protested against the infringement of the Jewish rights involved in the regulations of the municipal ordinance.
The meeting adopted a resolution demanding of the government that the municipal councils be elected this time for only two years, that the franchise be granted to all those who opted for citizenship in 1922, that the number of representatives of each of the communities on the communal councils be fixed in accordance with the number of rate payers and not in accordance with the number of their respective electors. It also demanded that the new Jewish residential quarters in Jerusalem be included in the boundaries of the municipal area.
A shipment of ten cases of materials, chiefly garments and linens for hospital patients and orphans of Palestine, will leave on Tuesday on the “Blue Triangle” of the Export Steamship Company lines.
The articles are sent by the Palestine Supplies Department of Hadassah, the Women’s Zionist Organization of America. They are contributions from 700 sewing groups of Hadassah and other women’s organizations.
The department, which has its headquarters at 33 Wast 17th Street, New York, sends ten shipments a year to Palestine, the materials amounting to about $60,000. These are distributed among twenty-five institutions. Mrs. A. H. Fromenson is head of the department, directing 20,000 women throughout the country.
