The municipality of Csegled. Hungary. rejected the appeal of the Jewish population of the city to annul an old ordinance prohibiting Jews from bathing in the municipal baths whenever the weather makes it necessary. The ordinance permits Jews to go to the municipal baths only once a week.
The mayor in replying to the appeal stated that the majority of the city council was opposed to abolishing the ordinance, although he personally does not believe in the wisdom of having a numerus clausus with regard to the city waters. The only solution the mayor could offer was the erection next year of an additional municipal bath which would be free of this limitation. The city head added that he hopes that “sufficient Jewish contributions would be forthcoming to make the erection of the new baths possible.”
