Jews Gain Offices in Municipal Elections

The Municipal elections held Tuesday in New York, resulting in the reelection of Mayor Walker, brought into office a number of Jews. Borough President Julius Miller of Manhattan, was re-elected on the Democratic ticket.

Irwin Untermyer and County Judge Albert Cohn were elected to the Supreme Court bench on the Democratic ticket. Judge Cohn was born in New York City, December 20, 1886. He was appointed by Gov. Alfred E. Smith. County Judge of Bronx County and elected for a full term January 1, 1926. He is a member of the Board of Directors of the Y.M.H.A. of the Bronx and is second Vice-President of I.O.B.B., District No. 1.

Irwin Untermyer was born in New York City, February 2, 1886. He was graduated from Columbia Law School in 1910 after which he entered the law office of his father, Samuel Untermyer. His work in the five cent fare case brought by the Interborough Subway Co. recently, in which he was associated with his father, brought public recognition. This is his first public office.

Aron Steuer and Louis Goldstein were elected City Court Justices on the Democratic ticket.

Aron Steuer, son of Max D. Steuer, was born in New York City, October 22, 1898. He attended Harvard University and Columbia University Law School. In his legal work he has been associated with his father.

Mr. Steuer is associate director of the 92nd Street Y.M.H.A., is a member of the Business Men’s Council of the New York Federation and a member of the legislative committee of the County Lawyers’ Association. This is his first public office.

Louis Goldstein was born in Brooklyn. He attended New York University and New York Law School. For the past sixteen years he has been an Assistant District Attorney. In 1911 he served as a member of the New

York State Assembly. He is president of the Williamsburg Y. M. H. A.

Among the Municipal Court Judges elected were David Morris, Judge Morris Eder, re-elected, Judge Jacob S. Strahl, re-elected, and Frank Wasserman.

David Morris was born in New York City fifty-five years ago. He is a member of the Jewish Court of Arbitration and the Grand Street Boys Association. Judge Eder has served on the Municipal Court bench for the past ten years. Judge Strahl has been Justice of the Municipal Court since 1910.

Aaron L. Jacoby was elected Sheriff for Kings County.

Mrs. Rebecca F. Hoffman was elected Register for New York County on the Democratic ticket. Mrs. Hoffman was born in New York City. She is the widow of the late Municipal Court Justice Benjamin Hoffman. Mrs. Hoffman was a delegate to the Democratic National Conventions in 1920, 1924 and 1928. She is a member of the School Board and is known for her activities among needy school children on the lower East Side.
