More than one thousand Chicago Jews gathered to pay tribute to Chaim Nachman Bialik last night at the LaSalle Hotel. The meeting was marked by dignity and solemnity.
Rabbi Solomon Goldman of Temple Anshe Emet said that the works of Bialik would last forever among the Jewish people and predicted that in two or three hundred years the Talmud would be amended to read: “There came a defender of our people, Bialik.”
The poet was described by Rabbi Samuel M. Blumenfield, who presided, as one idolized by the Jewish people and who spoke as the old prophet spoke. Bialik’s poems were sung by the Halevi Choral Society. David Itkin, member of the Habimah Players, read Bialik’s poems. A memorial scroll was read in behalf of Chicago Jewry in Hebrew by Dr. Meyer Waxman, Hebrew writer and scholar on the faculty of the Chicago Theological College.
