First Army Group in Germany, April 15 (JTA) – Thousands of Jewish internees in the Bergen-Belzen camp have been liberated by British troops which captured the area near Hanover in which the camp is situated. It is estimated that about 60,000 persons – Jews and political offenders – are in the concentration camp.
The internees will not be released from the camp until a detailed registration of all the people held there is completed by the military authorities. In the meantime, it was established that there are 1,500 typhus cases and 9,000 cases of other diseases among the internees.
Capt. Herbert Fried, a Jewish officer of the U. S. Army, has been named military governor of the city of Hanover, it was disclosed today.
