Dr. Ariel Bension, delegate of the Keren Hayesod, has just finished a successful campaign in Spain and Portugal. In spite of the difficult economic situation obtaining in both countries, and particularly in Portugal, it was proved that the sympathies of Jewry are entirely with their brethren in Palestine and the desire to demonstrate that Palestine Jewry does not stand alone, was very keen.
In Spain, where there is no organized community, a number of Jews, whose identity had hitherto not been disclosed, donated to the Fund, so that steps are now being taken to organize themselves into a Jewish body. A luncheon was given in honor of Dr. and Mrs. Bension, in Madrid, tendered by Don Manuel Ortega, a non-Jewish friend of the cause. Many distinguished writers and prominent non-Jews were present, and expressed themselves in favor of the Jewish Homeland in Palestine.
In Portugal, where Zionism counts many friends, a distinct material success was achieved, making the per capita contribution of the small Jewish colony among the highest in the world. Several Marannos made voluntary contributions for the sake of “La Tierra Santa,” which they have never forgotten. A great deal of enthusiasm was created in the community. Dr. Bension met with the Minister for Foreign Affairs and with other notables of the government. The general feeling among the non-Jews of Portugal is one of friendliness and respect for the Jew.
