The plight of German Jewry was compared with the life of Moses Mendelssohn by Rabbi Max Malina, of the German Jewish Congregation, speaking yesterday before the history discussion group of Emple Rdeph Sholem on “Moses Mendelssohn and His Influence on German Jewry.”

“Though himself a pious Jew, Mendelssohn could not convey this piety to his children or his grandchildren and in a genuine sense, the fate of his family is a symbol of the fate which has overtaken German Jewry today,” said Rabbi Malina.

Moses Mendelssohn deserves the reverence of all Jews,” continued the speaker, “but the foreces which he set in motion has in a large measure contributed to those concepts which help dicorce many German Jews from allegiance to Judaism and the Jewish people.”

SETTLEMENT TO MARK LILLIAN WALD BIRTHDAY

Lillian D. Wald of Henry Steet Settlement fame reaches her sixty-seventh year on March 10. She has been living for the past year and a half at Westport, Connecticut. On August 1 of last year she retired officially as head worker of hte Henry Street Settlement, of which she is the founder.

Plans at the Henry Street Settlement for the celebration of Miss Wald’s birthday are not yet definitely formed. It is known, however, that the music school chilldren will broadcast over WEVD in her honor on March 10.
