In an effort to stem the tide of family violence, Jewish Women International is asking Jewish families to light an extra candle on Rosh Hashanah.
The first night of Rosh Hashanah falls on Oct. 1, which coincides with the first day of Domestic Violence Month.
Some 15 to 20 percent of American Jewish women are victims of domestic violence, a rate comparable to that of non-Jewish women, according to the Washington-based group.
The candle campaign, called “Light a Fire–Share a Vision,” is intended to increase awareness about family violence. Candles, which come with a prayer for victims of domestic abuse, are being sold for $18 each.
