The Jewish National Fund has opened a 50-mile road paralleling the West Bank of the Jordan River from Umm Tuts in the north to the Kalliah military outpost on the shores of the Dead Sea. The new road provides a short cut by by-passing the existing Jericho road. For the time being it is used mainly as a patrol route for the Army and border police. Israel is speedily replacing dirt roads with paved roads in border areas to prevent the planting of mines.
