Jordan made a peace overture to Israel via television last night. Amman TV inaugurated a daily news program in Hebrew with a pledge to promote peace in the region. It is the first Hebrew program ever beamed from the Jordanian capital. It began with a promise to address “the people of Israel in their own language in a bid to promote peace” in the area. An Information Ministry official started the program with a pledge to give the Israeli audience “straight-forward news.”
The newscast was read by a young woman with a fair knowledge of Hebrew. It omitted Amman’s major news item of the day, a sabotage attempt by El Fatah in the Jordanian capital. The news covered a variety of international events and a story about declining tourism in Israel for which the Israeli weekly magazine, Haolam Hazeh, was given as the source.
