A Jordanian Royal Mission is now on its way to Libya, Tunisia and Morocco, bearing invitations from King Hussein for an Arab “summit conference” to deal with “the Palestine and Refugee Problems,” it was reported here today from Amman. The mission has already delivered such invitations to Lebanon, Saudi Arabia, Kuwait and Sudan, the report says. Nothing is mentioned about extending such invitations to Iraq and to the United Arab Republic of Egypt and Syria.
In an interview with foreign correspondents in Amman, King Hussein said that “if the United Arab Republic takes only one step forward toward a rapprochement with Jordan, Jordan will take many steps” between his country and the BAR, but also hopes to promote those relations “to a level not achieved before.” At the same time he said that “the closing by the Syrians of their border with Jordan “was not at all encouraging action” on the part of the United Arab Republic.
The Jordanian King told the correspondents that “the first thing that should be done to solve the Palestine question is the restoration of rights to the Palestinian Arab refugees who lost their homeland ten years ago.” He said that Jordan was now studying the report and recommendations on the Arab refugees made last month by United Nations Secretary General Dag Hammarskjold and was consulting with other Arab states on the recommendations.
