Joseph Cherner, nationally prominent Jewish leader and philanthropist, died here today. He was 58. Mr. Cherner, who gave his Washington home to the State of Israel for its Embassy in Washington, was a member of the national board of the United Jewish Appeal and had been national chairman of the UJA.
He was also active in the Israel Bond Organization, Palestine Economic Corporation, American Committee for the Weizmann Institute, American Friends of the Hebrew University and Albert Einstein Medical College of Yeshiva University.
