Judge Benjamin N. Cardozo, Chief Justice of the Court of Appeals has declined the invitation of President Coolidge to be one of the representatives of the United States in the International Court of Arbitration at The Hague.
“I have decided not to accept the invitation,” Judge Cardozo said at his summer home in Allenurst, N. J. “I reached this decision regretfully, but I felt that I could not undertake the work without conflict with my work as Chief Judge of the Court of Appeals.”
Judge Cardozo, who received no direct invitation from President Coolidge, said he had written to former Secretary of State Charles E. Hughes, one of the American representatives in the Court, informing him that he could not take the place.
