Judge Simon H. Rifkind of the United States Southern District Court of New York has been appointed by the War Department as chief civilian adviser on Jewish affairs to General Eisenhower, the Jewish Telegraphic Agency learned today.
Judge Rifkind will advise U.S. Army headquarters in Europe on displaced Jews and other matters concerning the welfare of liberated Jews in the American-held zones in Europe. It is understood that the invitation to Judge Rifkind to accept this post came directly from Gen. Eisenhower. Major Judah Nadich, who has been acting temporarly as adviser on Jewish affairs at Gen. Eisenhower’s headquarters, will remain at his post for the time being, it was stated.
Judge Rifkind is well-liked by all Jewish groups in the United States regardless of their particular views on Jewish matters. He was born in Russia in 1901 and came to New York in 1910. He was admitted to the New York bar in 1926 and became a partner in the law firm of Wagner, Quillinan and Rifkind in 1930. He has been a judge since 1941.
