Rabbi Meir Kahane, leader of the Jewish Defense League, was arraigned by a Jerusalem magistrate under Israel’s sedition laws yesterday for incitement in connection with the JDL’s campaign to get Israeli Arabs to leave the country. Rabbi Kahane, who was released on IL 5000 bail, faces a jail sentence of up to five years if convicted.
His arraignment stemmed from a JDL letter writing campaign offering to pay Arabs to get out of Israel. Hundreds of letters were allegedly mailed. Meanwhile, legal sources here said Rabbi Kahane would go on trial shortly for his alleged role in JDL attempts to smuggle arms out of Israel to conduct a private war with Arab terrorists in Europe. He was arraigned on the arms smuggling charges several months ago.
