The new Administration intends to press for liberalized immigration legislation, it became known here today, following a meeting between President-elect John F. Kennedy and Representative Francis E. Walter of Pennsylvania.
Rep. Walter co-sponsored the McCarran-Walter Immigration Act, which has been repeatedly attacked as grossly inadequate by liberal political groups. Sen. Kennedy, during his campaign, also criticized the Act.
The President-elect yesterday conferred with Mr. Walter, who said that they talked about the refugee problem and especially “the new problems in Europe” of refugees going there from Africa. This was taken by political groups here as an indication that the President-elect notified the congressman of his intention to get through Congress more liberal immigration measures which have been pledged by the Democratic party in its platform.
