Knesset Defeats Deportation Proposal

A proposal that Israel deport any Palestinian sentenced to more than one year for security offenses was decisively defeated Wednesday in the Knesset.

The vote was 58-23 against the measure, which was introduced by Hanan Porat of the National Religious Party. Four members abstained.

Justice Minister Dan Meridor strongly opposed the suggested legislation. Speaking earlier in the day at the at the induction of new magistrates, he stressed the need to defend the rule of law.
