Austrian Chancellor Bruno Kreisky has proposed the stationing of U.S. and Soviet troops in the United Nations peace units in the Middle East. At a press dinner last Wednesday; Kreisky told journalists that “a long-range military solution in the Middle East was impossible and would lead to the destruction of the Jewish State.”
Kreisky who paid an official two-day visit to Austria’s tiny western neighboring country, said the two superpowers should guarantee the frontiers of all Middle East states. “They should dispatch units of their own into the United Nations peace corps as a contribution to saving the peace in the area.”
Referring to Austrian troops stationed on the Golan Heights Kreisky said, “They can also be sent away. But nobody would dare send Soviet or American troops away. We have agreed to station our troops in the Middle East for purely idealist reasons,” Kreisky said.
ISRAEL WILL HAVE TO TALK TO TERRORIST GROUPS
Commenting on statements of Secretary of State Henry A. Kissinger on possible military actions against oil producing countries, Kreisky said: “There cannot be any strategy directed against oil producers, but only collaboration between producers and consumers. Any military action would be completely senseless.”
Kreisky said Israel eventually would have to accept negotiations with underground or terrorist organizations. “Many other states have already been forced to accept the same necessity.” The Austrian Chancellor is planning to head a second fact finding mission of the Socialist International to the Middle East within the next few months. “I am sure that there still exist a lot of possibilities which have never been tried out,” Kreisky said. The Socialist International sent a delegation to the Middle East last year. The delegation, headed by Kreisky, paid visits to Israel and several Arab countries.
