A big gathering at the London Air Park yesterday witnessed Herr Robert Kronfeld, the young Viennese Jew, who last week won the £1,000 prize offered by the “Daily Mail” for gliding across the Channel, the first man to accomplish the double crossing, create a new record for gliding over flat country. He was in the air for one hour and ten minutes at a height most of the time of 2,400 feet.
The Duke of Sutherland, former Under-Secretary of Air, presented the “Daily Mail” £1,000 cheque to Herr Kronfeld. The ex-King Alfonso of Spain, the Austrian Minister in London, Lord Stonehaven, till recently Governor-General of Australia, the Dowager Lady Swaythling, and Mr. Gordon England, president of the British Gliding Association, were among those present. Herr Kronfeld’s effortless glide for more than an hour amazed the thousands of people who had gathered to see him receive the prize. It seemed he would never descend, for after gaining a height of 2,400 feet, he was able to maintain it almost indefinitely. Ex-King Alfonso congratulated Herr Kronfeld, and the Austrian Minister declared that the reception accorded to his young countryman indicated the friendly feeling which Great Britain had for Austria and which Austria warmly reciprocated.
