L. Dean Brown, a former president of the Washington-based Middle East Institute and an ambassador to Jordan in the 1970s, died last week at 80. Brown, who also served as a special envoy to Lebanon in 1976, was a frequent critic of U.S. policy in the Middle East and was known for traveling with a pistol at his side when he served in that region.
