The Chest for Liberation of Workers of Europe, representing the 3,000,000 workers in the American Federation of Labor, today joined James G. McDonald, former High Commissioner for German refugees in the demand that “the nations of the world use all the influence and all the legal means they possess to stop the complete annihilation of the Jewish race in the Third Reich and the brutal suppression of civic and religious freedom.”
In a letter to Mr. McDonald, Matthew Woll, chairman of the Labor Chest and vice president of the American Federation of Labor, declared:
“The whole civilized world is aghast at the performance of the Nazi regime, and as a Christian and a man of Labor, I wish to assure you that the cause of the Jews, the cause of the persecuted Catholic Church and the cause of persecuted religion concern us as deeply as the cause of Labor, and that we shall spare no efforts to help the victims of this regime and to encourage every legitimate movement that will help to bring Germany back into civilization.” The Chest was set up at the 1934 A.F.L. convention in San Francisco.
