Governor Landon yesterday decried the rise of racial prejudice as “vicious” and “contrary to our fundamental American conceptions” in short rear-platform talks delivered at Madison and Fond du Lac.
This is no ordinary campaign, the Republican nominee for president said at Fond du Lac, and the issues at stake may mean the kind of government we leave our children.
“This country was built by men and women of every European stock,” he declared. “Men and women of all races and religions worked side by side as good citizens and true Americans.
“One of the disturbing things is to see a rising tide of intolerance, of racial prejudice creeping on this country. This is as vicious as it is contrary to our fundamental American conceptions. We must preserve our unity which is so essential to the preservation of American liberties.”
At Madison he stated:
“We must ever remember that academic freedom, religious freedom, political freedom and freedom of opportunity are all bound up together. In fighting to maintain our freedom we will make greatest progress by fighting for the freedom of all.”
