More campaigns for the United Palestine Appeal will be held during the month of May in various parts of the country, than in any other month of the year, according to an announcement issued by the national headquarters in New York. The quota for these campaigns also totals a larger figure than the amount aimed at in previous months. Some of the most important drives that are being conducted during this month are those in Chicago, Philadelphia, and Milwaukee. The first two cities aim at a goal of $300,000. Milwaukee has adopted a quota of $50,000.
The Seaboard Zionist Region will wind up the campaigns in that territory during this month with campaigns in the various states covered by the region. Richmond, Va., with a quota of $10,000, will launch its campaign on May 12, with Jacob Heckman as chairman. Charleston, S. C., will open its drive for $5,000 on Sunday, May 13, with Sol. Goldman and Joseph Fromberg, President of the B’nai Brith, 5th District, conducting the drive. Norfolk, Va., will launch its campaign on May 19th, with a public reception to Nahum Sokolow, and will aim at $12,000. Dr. J. A. Lipnick is Chairman of the U. P. A. Campaign in that city.
Another of the larger U. P. A. campaigns to be launched during May will be in Washington, D. C., which has a quota of $35,000. The Washinton drive will be launched on May 11, and will conclude on Sunday, May 26 with a function at which Dr. John Haynes Holnies and Rabbi Wolf Gold will be the speakers. A meeting will be held on May 17, with Nahum Sokolow as the guest of honor. The Reform group will be represented in the campaign through three vice-chairmen Dr. Abram Simon, Rabbi of the Eighth Street Temple; Mrs. Charles Goldsmith, and Rudolph B. Behrend. The chairmen of the drive are Isidore Hershfield and Levi H. David. Louis E. Spiegler is chairman of the administrative committee; Rabbi Louis J. Schwefel, chairman of the Men’s Division: and Mrs. John M. Safer, head of the Women’s Division.
Judge William M. Lewis of Philadelphia, national chairman of the United Palestine Appeal, will be the principal speaker, together with Dr. Leo Wolman, one of the experts of the Joint Palestine Survey Commission, at the opening of the campaign of the Buffalo U. P. A., on May 19. Charles Polakoff is chairman of the drive, whose goal is $25,000. Judge Lewis will also be the principal speaker and guest of honor at the opening of the campaign in Denver, Colo., on May 22.
Other drives to be launched during the month are those in Hudson County, N. J., which will open on May 13, with a banquet in honor of Nahum Sokolow, for a quota of $25,000.
Philadelphia’s campaign for $300,000 opens on May 12, with a dinner at the Benjamin Franklin Hotel. The officers in charge of the drive for $300,000 are Louis E. Levinthal, chairman; Martin O. Levy, secretary; Mrs. Frank B. Skversky, chairman of the Women’s Committee; and Jerome H. Louchheim, treasurer.
The drives in Chicago and Milwaukee which have already opened, will continued until the latter part of this month.
The majority of the sectional campaign functions in New York City has been held. The last three will take place during the coming month. Bronx will hold its last function of the year for the U. P. A., at a banquet on May 14, at the Chateau de Luxe. Morris Rothenberg, chairman of the Board of Directors of the U. P. A., and Mrs. Archibald Silverman of Providence, R. I., will be the principal speakers and guests of honor. Dr. Harry Projector is chairman of the arrangements committee, and is assisted by the following: Louis Rimsky, treasurer; Bernard Crausman. Louis Altschul, Morris Polsky, Hon. J. I. P. Adlerman, Dr. Samuel W. Boorstein, Alex Selkin, Isidore Langner, Matthew L. Margolish, Herman Linetzky, Rabbi Philip R. Alstat, Philip Wattenberg, Reuben Bernson, Samuel Berger, Dr. P. L. Bereano, Max Schneider, Dr. Leon R. Levinson, Dr. Benj. Rubenstein, Max A. Bogrowitz, Samuel Judenfreund. Felix Gottfried, Samuel J. Rosoff and Rev. H. Gofsaoff.
Sea Gate and Bensonhurst will conclude their drives simultaneously on May 12. The Sea Gate dinner, which will take place at the Whittier Inn, Sea Gate, will be a testimonial affair tendered to Morris Rothenberg, chairman of the Board of Directors of the U. P. A., in appreciation for his efforts in behalf of the Greater New York Campaign. Besides Mr. Rothenberg, Rabbi I. Elfenbein will address the function. James Garmesey is Chairman of the Sea Gate Campaign, and Isidore Fader, Treasurer.
The Bensonhurst annual banquet will take place at the Jewish Community House of Bensonhurst, with Judge Otto A. Rosalsky, chairman of the Greater New York Campaign, and Albert Ottinger, associate chairman, as the principal speakers and guests of honor. Samuel Kramer is chairman of the Bensonhurst campaign and David Freiberger, associate chairman, with arrangements for the dinner in charge of a committee headed by Abrahant Gash and including Max Greenfogel, associate chairman; Jacob Maslow, treasurer, and Nathan Spier, secretary.
It is expected that more money will be raised for the U. P. A. during the month of May than in any previous month.
At the Bernard B. Given State Oratorical Contest held in the Communal Home at Syracuse, Miss Helen Spelman and Charles Villency, representing the Binghamton Jewish Community Center, were awarded first prizes of silver cups donated by Mr. Given sponsor of the contest. Miss Spelman was selected by the judges to represent the state in the national contest to be held at Albany. Memorial Day; May 30.
