Prominent Berlin Jews were summoned to police headquarters today for questioning as to how the Reich can collect the billion-mark fine levied on German Jews, it was learned from a private source tonight.
It was apparent that collection of the fine imposed on the Jews as their punishment for the shooting of a third secretary in the German Embassy by a 17-year-old Polish Jew, will meet serious difficulties. One obstacle in its path is the fact that few Jews have any substantial liquid assets on hand, and will need to convert their holdings into cash, an operation entailing time.
Protestant sympathy for the tragic plight of the Jews was reflected in the prayers said today in Evangelical confessional churches throughout the Reich for “all those who suffer.”
Propaganda Minister Joseph Goebbels and the entire German press warned today that the Reich again will retaliate swiftly and sternly should Jews again attack any German living abroad. He declared in a speech at Germania Hall here that the “German Government and people are agreed that the Jewish question will be solved in the shortest possible time. That is the will of the German people and we execute its will.”
Julius Streicher, Germany’s No. I anti-Semite, hinted strongly in a speech at Nuremberg today that the Reich would soon segregate its terrorized Jewish population in ghettos.
“For the past 20 years,” Streicher exultantly cried, “I have told you this: the day will come when Germans will no longer live in hovels, but when Jews will live there. Then the Germans will live in beautiful houses.”
